REDISTRICTING… The Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission (MICRC) will be traveling the State conducting public hearings on their proposed redistricting maps. MICRC has proposed statewide drafts for the state House, state Senate, and Congress. By the Commission’s own measures, all of their proposals lean to the right by as much as 6%. There are 10 proposed maps that can be viewed here: https://michigan.mydistricting.com/legdistricting/michigan/comment_links# Please consider either attending an upcoming hearing and speak up for fair maps and the need for partisan fairness. The closest public hearing to the Leelanau Penninsula is on October 25th at Treetops Resort, in Gaylord. There will be 2 sessions where you can sign up to make public comments: 12:30 – 3:30 or 4:30 to 8:00. There is no single map that we are rallying around. Because none of the choices are good enough in terms of VRA compliance or partisan fairness. This does get complicated and can seem overwhelming. If you would just like to make a simple comment in written testimony about partisan fairness and creating maps that don’t benefit one party over the other that is fine.
