Petitions Update….
Be Aware that in Michigan, if a petition has 10% of voters’ signatures from the most recent gubernatorial election, the legislature can vote to make that petition law without it going to the ballot of the people and the governor cannot veto it. Since the current Michigan Legislature is controlled by Republicans it would basically be a rubber stamp for them.
There will be a lot of petitions out there for you to sign this campaign season.  It can get confusing so here is what we are recommending so far, more proposed petitions are in the pipeline……
Remember – do not sign twice! That will negate both of your signatures. Remember which ones you have signed!
Promote the Vote 2022: YES!!! SIGN THIS ONE- SIGN THIS ONE!  
  • Allows 9 days of early voting
  • Allows public to subsidize absentee ballots
  • If no ID-sign an affidavit
  • Voters can request absentee ballots from here and onward
  • Requires voter drop boxes
  • Post-election audits are done only by state and local officials.
  • Makes Elections more accessible and still secure
Secure MI Vote: NO! DO NOT SIGN – DO NOT SIGN! 
  • Endeavors to make it harder to vote
  • Requires people to disclose partial social security numbers when registering to vote
  • Require voter ID for in-person and absentee ballots. No more affidavits are allowed. 6 days after voting to produce an ID if one does not have one.
  • No automatic mailing of an absentee ballot, must request one each time.
  • Restrict mail-in-ballots.
  • Call 517-481-2165 to report Secure MI Vote petition circulators to an MDP response team.
Raise the Wage MI: Yes! SIGN THIS ONE!

This would increase the minimum wage from $9.87 to $15/hour over 5 years, starting at $11/hour in 2023.

Reproductive Freedom for All: Yes! SIGN THIS ONE!

If the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade, a 1931 Michigan law could go back into effect, making abortion illegal and threatening doctors who provide abortion services with prison for up to 15 years.  This initiative would amend the state Constitution to make reproductive freedom a right, repealing the 1931 law.

Repeal Truth in Sentencing to Allow for Credit/ Good Time: Yes! SIGN THIS ONE!
This initiative would repeal truth in sentencing laws that require those convicted of crimes to serve their entire sentences.  Prisoners, under this proposal, will be able to earn credits that reduce sentences for those who earn college degrees or certificates, work in training programs, or work in prisons.  This would increase incentives for rehabilitation and success once released from prison.

Leelanau County occupies the ancestral, traditional and contemporary lands of Anishinaabek people.
